New Year Travel: Beaches or Slopes?

 In Blog

It is now 5 days into 2024 and already thousands of people are either on holiday or planning their first adventures of 2024. Those who enjoy winter sports are probably already on the ‘piste’. I hear first hand that the mountains are choc a bloc with sporty types careering down slopes of various degrees. My sources also tell me that there is plenty of snow in Europe and the resorts are almost full to capacity.

For Winter Sporty Types: The Hotel Waldhaus in Sils Maria Switzerland has a very attractive winter ‘Feel-Good Package’, which includes a specially designed dynamic foot and leg massage to revitalize tired legs for the winter sports fans! Being a sports enthusiast doesn’t mean that culture is excluded as they also offer a ‘StradivariFEST’ package which includes in-house musical events. As for the outside sports the hotel has very good details listed on their website including information on cross country skiing along the Engadine valley. This family owned and run hotel is very much in the discreet luxury bracket. One of my favourite touches are the mats outside the bedrooms for guests to leave their outdoor boots.

For Leisurely Sun Seekers: Those who might like to keep their fingers and toes a little warmer could opt for a trip to Tenerife in the Canary Islands. There are several superb hotels to choose from but if you fancy a quiet time the Iberostar Grand El Mirador is a very good option. It is an adult only hotel, which is a brave concept as it narrows its client base on the one hand but gives a strong message about the hotel’s characteristics to those who wish to stay at the hotel. As they say in their blurb the hotel is designed down to the very last detail to make your dreams come true; aspirational at the very least!
Its rooms have spectacular views of the ocean. Some gentle exercise can be attained, if desired, on the nearby golf course. The all important weather is usually around the 21/22° this time of year so a very pleasant change from a chilly January in Ireland.

Whilst these are two opposite types of holidays both will have the same result in getting you ready to face the rigours of the year ahead.
